Types of Dental Implants
There are three main types of implants used in most cases.
- Root form implant – The most common type of implant is the root form implant. The implants are basically titanium screws that are attached to the underlying jawbone. The tooth replacement, called an abutment is then affixed to the implant.
- Plate form implant – Instead of a screw, a rectangular plate is inserted vertically and the abutment is applied to one or two metal prongs.
- Subperiostial implant – If the bone is severely small or damaged this option is used. It uses a fitted plate that sits on top of the bone, but under the gums to which the tooth replacement is attached.
Dental implants do not only replace the tooth, but also the root, which helps strengthen the bone and reverse the resorption process.
