How DIAGNOdent Works
DIAGNOdent uses a specialized light at the end of a small tube to find and rate tooth decay using a numeric scale. Depending on the extent of tooth decay, the light on the DIAGNOdent hand piece will reflect with more or less fluorescence.
We offer St Louis patients DIAGNOdent diagnostics because it prevents the discomfort associated with having to use a dental pick to determine whether a tooth has a cavity or not. Although it still requires touching the tooth, DIAGNOdent does not require pressure, and simply uses a slight rocking motion against the surface of the tooth. The process takes a little longer than traditional cavity diagnosis, but produces no discomfort and can tell us exactly how much decay your tooth has.
This in turn provides a way to determine how extensively a tooth needs to be repaired, or even if it needs to be repaired at all. DIAGNOdent can prevent cavity progression by positively identifying a cavity early on so it can be cared for with the least invasive general dentistry treatment possible.
