Questions & Answers
Why should I choose porcelain (white) fillings over metal amalgam?
There are many reasons. The most obvious is beauty. Even in the back of your mouth, metal-colored fillings are visible when you talk and laugh. More important are the health concerns. White fillings will not damage the structural integrity of your teeth and metal-colored fillings can, and the mercury in silver amalgam fillings may pose serious health risks.

What are my options in tooth-colored fillings?
Cosmetic dentist Dr. Quigless offers porcelain inlays and onlays and white composite fillings. Either choice will be color-matched to your existing teeth.
Will my fillings make my teeth sensitive to heat and cold?
No. The materials we use for your white composite fillings do not conduct heat and cold, as metal amalgam does, nor do they expand and contract like anything metal. So you can eat and drink your favorite foods and beverages in comfort.
Can my old fillings be replaced?
Yes. Many of our patients choose to have their old fillings replaced to match their natural tooth color. At some point metal fillings either loosen and fall out, or crack the tooth, and these are also good reasons for replacing them. Further, replacing your old fillings can reveal any decay or damage caused by inferior materials and stops that damage in its tracks.
How do I know if I need a filling or a crown?
This will depend on several factors including:
- Amount of damage
- Strength of your tooth
- Size of decayed area
Dr. Quigless will use the smallest restoration possible to restore the health and strength of your tooth. The goal is to preserve as much of your existing tooth material as possible. If an onlay will mend and strengthen the tooth, Dr. Quigless will go that route. If not, a crown may be a better option.
Will I have to wait for my porcelain restorations or can you do it in one visit?
We have the equipment to create your restorations right here in our office while you wait. You do not have to wait for your fillings or crowns to be sent to an off-site lab for milling, and then come for a second visit to have them fitted. However, for porcelain veneers, we do use a dental lab, as Dr. Quigless feels that our Cerec technology does the best job on crowns and fillings.
